The Giraffe And The Pelly And Me!

I like this book which was written by Roald Dahl. Very cute. By the way it is a children book.

His book are easily spotted by the words and phrases he used.

He likes to put sweets and chocolate in his books and the name are uniquely created by him. Sherbet Suckers, Caramel Fudge, Russian Toffee, Sugar Snorters, Butter Gumballs, Scarlet Scorchdroppers, Gumtwizzlers, Fizzwinkles, Frothblowers, Spitsizzlers, Liplickers and Plushnuggets. Just to name a few.

He also like to make use of words with sound alike. Such as, “For Sail” and also “Soled” which was supposed to mean for sale and sold. Interesting. Haha. But spoil our English if we don’t know anything.

One of his signature of his books especially for children are his poems! They are really nice especially when there are too many words, then suddenly there is a poem to connect the story. Refreshing in a way.

Well, before i write these peoms, this book is about a giraffe, a pellican and a monkey trying to earn money by cleaning windows for people. They haven’t started their bussiness yet, so the pelican was hungry.

‘Oh, how i wish
For a big fat fish!
I’m hungry as ever could be!
A dish of fish is my only wish!
How far are we from the sea?’

By the time everything has settled, it was time to promote their self.

‘We’ll polish your glass
Till it’s shining like brass
And it sparkles like the sun on the sea!
We are quick and polite,
We’ll come day or night,
The Giraffe and the Pelly and me!

We’re a fabulous crew,
We know just what to do,
And we never stop work to drink tea.
All your windows will glow
When we give them a go,
The Giraffe and the Pelly and me!

We use water and soap
Plus some kindness and hope,
But we never use ladders, not we.
Who needs ladders at all
When you’re thirty feet tall?
Not Giraffe, and not Pelly! Not me!

Then the pelican wanted to show off his beak.

‘And let me tell you why.
I have a very special beak!
A special beak have I!
You’ll never seen a beak so fine,
I don’t care where you go.
There’s magic in this beak of mine!
Hop in and don’t say No!

Then the Giraffe continued.

‘My neck can stretch terribly high,
Much higher than the eagles can fly.
If I ventured to show
Just how high it would go
You’d lose sight of my head in the sky!’

After a whole book of teeny-weeny conflicts and songs and laughter, Roald Dahl ended the story with this.

‘We have tears in our eyes
As we wave our goodbyes,
We so love being with you, we three.
So do please now and then
Come and see us again,
The Giraffe and the Pelly and me.

All you do is to look
At this page of this book
Because that’s where we always will be.
No book ever ends
When it’s full of your friends
The Giraffe and the Pelly and me.’

Roald Dahl always include his famous poem at the end of each book in his biodata. I like this one.

My candle burns at both ends
It will not last the night
But ah my foes and oh my friends
It gives a lovely light.

Besides these poems, he has this talent to write really cute sentences.
‘I am a Geraneous Giraffe and a Geraneous Giraffe cannot eat anything except the pink and purple flowers of the Tinkle-tinkle tree.’

He uses weird words in his sentences too.
‘A walnut fresh from the tree is scrumptious-galumptious, so flavory-savory, so sweet to eat that it makes me all wobbly just thinking about it!’

Such a talented writer. But so little books of his before he left this world.
